CBOP History

Formed in 2001, Central Bay of Plenty Rugby Sub-Union (CBOP RSU) replaced Rotorua Rugby Sub-Union as the governing body responsible for promoting, fostering and controlling amateur rugby within the Rotorua & Galatea boundaries.

As an Incorporated Society affiliated to the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, CBOP RSU boasts 9 clubs within the region:

Marist St Michaels
Eastern Pirates

Central Bay of Plenty Rugby Sub-Union is actively involved in promoting and fostering rugby at all levels, age groups, genders & ethnicities, and to that end, clubs have representation in some if not all of the following:

· Junior Rugby (U6 – U13)
· Senior / Premier & Division 1
· Development
· Senior Reserve
· Colts / U21’s
· Women’s Rugby
· Maori Rugby (Te Waiariki Maori)

We also offer support & resources to several Secondary Schools in our region, assisting where possible with coaching and mentoring players.

CBOP RSU offers opportunities for players to achieve higher honours in age group and senior representative rugby:

· CBOP U14s
· CBOP U15s
· CBOP Seniors

These teams are funded by CBOP RSU and compete in post season Bay of Plenty Wide competitions with Eastern & Western Bay of Plenty Rugby Sub-Unions.

As a voluntary organisation we rely heavily on the many good people from within the Central Bay of Plenty Community who, with our support, administrate, coach, mentor, manage, support and encourage all our players.

The day to day affairs / governance of the sub-union is managed by a committee comprising Officers (voted in at the AGM)

2 x Vice Presidents
5 x Executive Members
and Club Representatives 1 x Delegate from each of the 9 clubs
1 x Delegate from CBOP Junior Rugby

This committee meets regularly to discuss, make decisions & give guidance on matters that arise pre, during & post season, including (but not limited to):

Junior (age group) Rugby (The day to day running of junior rugby is delegated to a junior rugby committee including junior delegates from each club)
Format & scheduling of local rugby competition for seniors
Representative age group and senior rugby (Stan Meads Cup, CBOP U13, CBOP U14 & U15 representative rugby)
Developing pathways & upskilling opportunities for junior & senior players, coaches & team management
Assistance and guidance to clubs in all matters pertaining to the administration of rugby at club level and beyond.
Liasing between CBOP clubs & BOPRU (conduit for information sharing)
Assisting and facilitating (where necessary) with coaching clinics including Rugby Smart, Small Blacks & Associate Referees.
Managing relationships with stakeholders & sponsors.
